About 6 millions of people live in the Ecoregion (exept China), 83% are Russians, 6% are Mongolians and 11% are Kazakhstani.

About 70 % of the population live in cities. The biggest cities (with the population of 500 thousands of people and more) are Krasnoyarsk, Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo (in Russia), Ust’-Kamenogorsk (in Kazakhstan).

People of the region speak languages of the Slavic, Turkic, Altai and Mongolia groups. Different nationalities live in the region – Russians, Halha-mongolians, Chinese, Kazakhs, Uigurs, Uzbeks, Altaians, Tuvinians, Buryats, Khakassians, Teleuts etc. – about 20 ethnical groups in whole.
