FOREST CODE ON FOREST CLUB’S AGENDA “It

MODEL FOREST PROJECT PUBLISHED A TEXTBOOK
ON SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT
On February 15, the Pskov Model Forest Project organized a presentation
of a textbook on fundamentals of sustainable forest management
in the Old Administrative Chamber of the Pskov Kremlin. The
book was produced within the framework of the project’s
educational component and is intended for secondary school students
from grades 8 through 10. more

WWF RUSSIA GOES CAMPAIGNING AGAINST THE NEW DRAFT OF THE FOREST
CODE
In September 2006, a draft of the principal law regulating relations
in Russia’s forest sector will be submitted for the second
reading by the State Duma. According to WWF Russia, the new
draft of the Forest Code is absolutely unacceptable since it
does not take into account interests of society, business, and
nature. On September 5, at a press conference in Moscow WWF
called on citizens of Russia to participate in a national campaign
against adoption of the current version of the Forest Code.

IN THE PSKOV MODEL FOREST PROCEED
Among 60 forest specialists who visited the Pskov Model Forest
on October 10, 2005, there were directors, chief foresters and
forest engineers from 22 agricultural leskhozes of Pskov Oblast.
Besides, the touring group also included Mikhail Zenkov, head
of Pskov Oblast Committee for Nature Use, and Nikolai Buriy,
head of the state enterprise “Pskovprirodresursi”

On February 19, the Pskov Model Project invited local community
to a regular meeting of the Forest Club, which incorporates
environmentally concerned community members residing on the
model territory. This informal public forum was attended by

and administration, educators and other interested individuals.

The jury of the National Ecological Contest “EcoMir”
(“EcoWorld”) awarded a diploma to the Pskov Model

THE PSKOV PROJECT LIVED UP TO EXPECTATIONS
A group of environmental managers from Stora Enso visited the
Pskov Model Forest on June 8th. Specialists in environmental
communication from Russia, Finland, Sweden and the Baltic States
got acquainted with approaches to sustainable forestry developed
within the framework of the Pskov Project, which is implemented
with the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation
Agency (Sida), Stora Enso and WWF Germany.

2004 VISITING SEASON HAS STARTED IN PSKOV MODEL FOREST
On April 1, the first group of specialists visited the model
forest area in Pskov Oblast. The group included Karin Wessman
from WWF Sweden, Christian Thompson from WWF Great Britain and
Roger Olsson, a Swedish journalist. Visit to the Pskov model
forest area was part of their five-day tour of Northwest Russia,
which aimed to provide up-to-date information about the situation
in the forest sector of the region.

“Deputy minister of natural
resources Valery Roshchupkin recommended us to apply the outcomes
of the Pskov Model Forest Project in the forest management practice
on the territory of Pskov Oblast. In cooperation with the project
we are ready to start work on elaborating region-specific regulations
for the whole territory of Pskov Oblast,” announced Mikhail
Astafurov, deputy head of the Pskov Regional Department of Natural
Resources, at the Steering Committee meeting of the Pskov Project
held on October 16 in Petersburg.

“We have come to Pskov Oblast to enjoy silence and to

in the framework of the new WWF project for promoting birdwatching
as a form of ecological tourism.

In October the Pskov Project's partner STF-Strug logging company
took part in the first phase of independent certification under
FSC Principles and Criteria. STF-Strug, a daughter company of
the Stora Enso group in Russia, is a polygon where new methods
of sustainable forestry have been tested within the framework
of the Pskov Model Forest Project.

BIRDS
FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM
The World Wide Fund for Nature in Russia has recently started
a project that aims to promote ecological tourism on the
territory of the Pskov Region in Northwest Russia. Two pilot
bird-watching tours have been planned within the framework
of the project to explore the recreational potential of
the region.
