"Environmental
Education through Library Network"
"Among the reasons that prompted us to develop a grant
proposal are lack of environmental culture and poor information
about the current situation in the forest sector," says
Z. Zakharova, the director of a district library in Strugi Krasnie.
The Small Grant Jury of the Pskov Model Forest Project approved
the proposal to establish a district-wide environmental network
that is going to comprise two libraries in the administrative
center of the district and 16 village libraries. Regular exhibitions
of books and periodicals on ecology and modern methods of forest
management, seminars, lectures, quizzes and other activities
are planned for children and adults.

"New
Approach to Clear-Cut Operations"
The WWF Pskov Model Forest Project demonstrated a new approach
to clear-cut operations. Unlike traditional harvesting practice
in Russia, this approach requires conservation of key biotopes
on harvested areas. "We are following internationally recognized
criteria of sustainable forestry which takes into account conservation
of biological diversity and interests of local residents",
says Victor Modin, one of the Project experts.

"Forest
Certification"
The Steering Committee of the WWF Pskov Model Forest Project
approved the decision to conduct a pre-assessment of the model
territory under FSC standards of voluntary certification. The
demand for certified forest products is increasing on the environmentally
sensitive western markets. Russian forest industry at large
is still on the way to independent certification and the Project's
mission is to set a practical example how FSC certification
standards can be applied to forest management in Northwest Russia.
The first step in this direction will be made this year.
