Mass wild reindeer poaching detected in the Krasnoyarsk region

More than 800 places of illegal wild reindeer hunting were discovered in Evenkia during the raid, organized with the support of WWF Russia. According to experts, poachers killed about 20.000 animals since August 2016.

Group of game wardens, police officers and inspectors from Central Siberian Nature reserve passed about 1500 km along the central part of the Krasnoyarsk region and inspected 16 transport units. Experts note cynicism of the poachers along the whole route. Illegal hunters shoot animals randomly and no aiming  many wounded deer try to escape, go to taiga and die there - about 300 carcasses of such dead animals were found.

The largest found massacre occurred in an area of about 6 hectares. Carcasses of deer are not completely processed and the remains are not disposed. According to experts, it presents a threat of dangerous infections outbreaks.

«In general, it seems that the wild reindeer is often shot for some single whim: he wanted a deer's tongue, shot, cut out the tongue, and left the rest. He wanted a ham - shot, chopped off the legs, threw away the rest,» Pavel Kochkarev, director of the Central Siberian Biosphere State Nature Reserve, shares his impressions.

As a rule, poachers are very well armed and equipped, use the most modern ATVs and snowmobiles. Inspectors lose in both equipment and quantity. Small staff is simply not enough to cover the vast territories of the region that is hundreds of thousands of hectares.

«We had signals that poaching in this region exists, but the true scale of the phenomenon is outrageous,» says project coordinator of WWF Russia Barents Office Ivan Mizin. - WWF Russia will continue to support anti-poaching measures, we plan to conduct new raids. In addition, population monitoring needs to be strengthened in order to better understand the routes of reindeer migration and to identify places where poaching can potentially be carried out.'

The population of the Taimyr population of wild reindeer (the southern part of which is in Evenkia) is estimated at 350-450 thousand animals. Hunting for these species is allowed, but the raid was conducted between March 20 and April 3, when hunting season was already closed.

The number of wild deer is declining in all the northern regions of the country. Now in Russia there are about 900 thousand species, while few decades ago there were 1.5 million reindeers. If the negative trend continues, soon the animals can become fewer times.

The main threats to wild reindeers are poaching and uncontrolled hunting, as well as the imperfection of the legislative framework governing various types of hunting for reindeer. For example, the world's largest Taimyr population has shrunk by almost half in the past decade due to over-hunting. Hunting is conducted in violation of existing terms, volumes and methods.
