WWF helps Amur tiger to survive

WWF-Russiahas provided urgent help for medical treatment of the Amur tiger being kept at Utyos rehabilitation center. Money was needed for drugs, cure of a professional vet, and special diet.

On April 27, a male Amur tiger approached the federal road Vladivostok-Khabarovsk and tried to attack vehicles passing by. When visually inspected the tiger did not have physical injures but looked starved and moved very slowly. Khabarovskii Province Service Wildlife protection and on PAs and Tiger Special Inspection’s specialists caught the animal and transported it to the rehabilitation center Utyos in the village of Kutuzovka in Khabarovskii Province.

“The tiger was in a critical condition when it was brought to the center. By now the cat’s well-being has improved. It is too early to speak about its complete recovery but we do all possible ‘to put the tiger on its legs’, - comments Eduard Kruglov, the Utyos director.

“Approaching roads and abnormal behavior towards cars truly speaks of unusual situation and of behavioral deviation. So far, the reason of tiger’s disease has not been found. First suggestion about hog plague is doubtful. We can not exclude poisoning. All necessary tests have been taken, results will be known next week. For example, toxics used for extirpation of wolves and homeless dogs are equally fatally dangerous for tigers, - says Sergei Aramilev, biodiversity conservation coordinator at WF-Russia’s Amur branch. – Once again, I want to draw attention to the lack of governmental center for rehabilitation of large predators in the RFE. We hope that soon this problem will be solved. Unfortunately, the government does not properly support existing animal rehab centers”.
