A new report prepared by Svanhovd Environmental Centre with financial support of Barents Sea secretariat and WWF and materials of international conference “Hydrocarbon transportation from ports of the White Sea: problems and possibilities of sustainable development of municipalities” were presented in Murmansk.
Representatives of Northern NGO Coalition jointly with organization “Nature and youth”, state nature protection bodies of Murmansk oblast, municipalities and transport companies participated in the presentation which took part in Murmansk, 17 of March 2005.
According to Dag Nagoda coordinator of the WWF Barents Sea Ecoregional Programme the territory bordering the reloading area is a very vulnerable area and a threat to marine environment is real mainly the ships will operate in a narrow fjord and coming closer to the coast for a considerable longer time as compared to reloading terminal in the Kola bay.
At the presentation materials of the international conference “Hydrocarbon transportation from ports of the White Sea: problems and possibilities of sustainable development of municipalities” which took place in October 2004 in Kandalaksha were presented. The publication was financed by Murmansk Consulate General of Kingdom of Norway and WWF-Russia.
The conference was arranged by the Northern NGO Coalition. The main goal of the conference was to initiate certain changes in legislation. This changes could ensure the participation of regional governmental bodies and public community in decision making during realization of potentially threatening projects within a region, including oil and gas projects.
Conference publication includes reports of participants from different regions of Russia and Norway and could be useful to anyone studying oil and gas transportation and nature protection in the White Sea region.
